Fire schools also offer various specific courses that teach a firefighter specialist firefighting training. Firefighting can be an exceptionally dangerous and serious profession, so it is prudent for hopeful future firefighters to learn about different fire schools that best fit their firefighting career preparation requirements.

Before enrolling at a fire school, aspiring firefighters should realize early on that a great many candidates pursue firefighter training every year and that most candidates are dismissed since most fire schools allow only the best to become future firefighters due to the dangers inherent to a firefighting profession.

Those keen on having a long-term firefighting career may consider getting a degree or four-year college education in fire sciences or even just an EMT-certification or finished conventional firefighter preparatory training at a trustworthy fire school before embarking for intensive firefighter training at a fire school.

After initial classroom instruction and guidance, the actual, practical field training of firefighters starts. This actual field groundwork and training called Live Fire Training Drills. This type of training uses “burn structures”, these are genuine structures intended to re-enact or simulate actual fires inside and outside actual structures.

The Live Fire Training Drills is conducted so that firefighter trainees have the field training necessary to practice their critical reasoning, rapid adaptability to continually changing life-threatening circumstances, and to inculcate clear-headedness under stress in an actual fire condition. Live fire drills are a type of active training, where emotional control and clear thinking are imparted in every student through repeated actual fire simulations.

In a live-fire exercise, instruction for firefighting students on how to use their training, on how to maintain their safety and the safety of others while addressing critical fire suppression issues during a fire crisis. Live Fire Training Drills teach firefighter trainees how to securely and successfully battle fires under controlled simulation.

Before formal acceptance at a fire school, all firefighter applicants must pass various written entry examinations as well as comprehensive medical and fitness exams. These exams are written examinations, medical and psychological exams, career aptitude exams, physical agility exams, and oral exams that are conducted through board interviews with experienced firefighters. The written exams that are conducted usually cover multiple questions based on firefighter trainee's logic, reasoning, and comprehension.

Career aptitude exams determine a candidate firefighter’s suitability and disposition on becoming a firefighter. The physical agility exams are timed tasks that determine the firefighter trainee’s ability to endure sustained physical activities under heavy time constraints and stress.

Because a firefighting career is rigorous, demanding, and very dangerous work, all firefighter applicants for fire school training must be in good physical shape, physically coordinated, can mentally react well to stressful situations, and is mentally alert under pressure.
